Halloween Safety Tips

In two days you will be sending your children out trick or treating, handing out candy or attending your own adult social functions. Each year we remind our readers on the importance of communication and using common sense on Halloween by providing tips and tricks to help keep everyone safe.

20 Halloween Safety Tips

  1. Costumes should be flame resistant. Avoid costumes with excessive flowing fabric, such as capes or wide sleeves, because loose clothing can easily brush up against a jack-o-lantern candle or other open flame, causing your child’s costume to catch on fire.
  2. Costumes should be easily seen. Use reflective tape or stickers on the front and back so they catch the eye of drivers.
  3. Give your children flashlights to use. They are fun for the kids and highly visible.
  4. Walk on the sidewalk or in the grass. NOT in the street. If you must walk in the street, always stay on the left . . .  facing oncoming traffic.
  5. Remind kids to use crosswalks or intersections when crossing the street, never between parked cars.
  6. Remind your kids not to accept rides from strangers and no shortcuts through backyards, alleys, parks or going into people's homes.
  7. Only approach well-lit homes and remain on the porch within street view.

  8. Inspect the candy. Don't eat anything that may look like it has been tampered with. Make sure your kids don't eat anything until you have inspected it, first.
  9. Don't eat homemade treats.
  10. Check the sex-offender registry for the neighborhoods your kids will be in.
  11. Map out routes and follow them.
  12. Make sure your kids are with a friend or in a group - don't go out alone.
  13. Did your child bring home too much candy? Offer to "buy back" candy in exchange for toys.
  14. If you are handing out candy to trick-or-treaters, clear off your sidewalk and porch so no one trips and falls.
  15. Keep your pets away from the kids.
  16. Dry ice is a great special effect, but can be dangerous if ingested. Don't use where children can reach it.
  17. Use battery-powered jack-o-lanterns instead of lighting candles.
  18. If you are attending your own social events, try to stay out of neighborhoods where you know kids will be walking. If you drive through one, slow down 5 mph under the posted speed limit and keep alert.
  19. Test your makeup before that night just to see how it will react on your skin. Stay away from those "spooky" contact lenses unless you've seen an eye care specialist.

  20. Be careful. According to the American College of Emergency Physicians, the chances of a child being hit by a car is about 4 times higher on Halloween night than any other night of the year . . . and you don't want to be that driver.

Golf Classic Fundraiser Tremendous Success for local Crime Stoppers

The Crime Stoppers Bill Grigsby 18th Annual Memorial Golf Classic was held Monday, August 20th at the Lakewood Oaks Golf Club in Lee's Summit, Missouri. Todd Harrison, second vice president of the not-for-profit organization and Operation's Manager at Atronic Alarms, Inc. in Lenexa, said that it was a tremendous success.

"We had organizations and individuals in the area sponsoring 33 participating teams, and it turned out to be a beautiful day," Harrison said. "This golf tournament is the single largest fundraiser for the Kansas City Crime Stopper's program raising over $50,000 for the 'Tips Hotline.'  To date we have given out around 1.2 million dollars."

The Kansas City Crime Stoppers is celebrating their 30th anniversary and Harrison has been on the board of the Kansas City chapter for seven years. He says has been fortunate to be involved with an organization that has such a positive impact on the community.

"We have been the sole instigator for over 10,000 Kansas City arrests due to the anonymous tips from residents . . . which is quite an impact," Harrison said. "We have also added to our program by giving texting and emailing options which appeals to all ages. Since we have implementing these new modes of communication our tips have shown a tremendous increase."

The phone number to call in an anonymous tip is 816-474-TIPS, or you may text TIP452 plus your message to CRIMES, which is 274637. You may also go to their website and submit a tip through an email form at kccrimestoppers.com.

Atronic Alarms was one of the organizations that sponsored the event and participated in the 4-man scramble. Their team consisted of Harrison; Perry Atha, president; Neil Atha, vice president and Detective Kevin Boehm, the Crime Stoppers coordinator.

Harrison said that each sponsorship give you slots for three players and then the 4th is a law enforcement officer of your choice. If you don't know someone in law enforcement then the organization will assign one to your team. All law enforcement is represented, from Police to FBI to Secret Service in every municipality.

"It is a lot of work, but with dozens of committee members and volunteers it really makes my job easier," said Harrison of the event.

Kansas Pulls out a Win in 2012 Rivalry Run

Last Saturday, August 18, 2012, Kansas pulled out a win at the 3rd annual Rivalry Run, a 5k race between Kansas and Missouri participants. It could have been the visit from Baby Jay in morning which helped motivate the Kansas runners as they ended with 663 to Missouri's 632.

The Rivalry Run, the main fundraising event for the not-for-profit organization Domestic Violence Protection Services Agency (DVPSA), saw over 900 participants this year as the "border war" with Kansas versus Missouri came together to "run off domestic violence."

The runners start out to run the 3.1 mile course
in Downtown Kansas City. All proceeds go to the DVPSA.

The DVPSA is a not-for-profit agency "founded with the idea that battered women need more than a protection order to ensure their safety." The agency assists in protecting families with providing trained, off-duty law enforcement to evaluate the situation and provide protection, as well as a home security system to help protect against unauthorized entry into the home.

Atronic Alarms was one of the sponsors of the event for the 2nd year in a row.

For more information or to participate in 2013, visit the Rivalry Run's website or check out the DVPSA online.

"Summer Programs" of Security Companies Result in Confusion

Summer is the time of year where the door-to-door, high pressured sales people start making their rounds in neighborhoods. Some companies in the security industry will hire young, fast talking kids who infer they are representing your existing alarm provider and that they are there to upgrade your system for "free." They may even go as far as saying their company has "bought out" your current alarm company.

If someone like this shows up at your doorstep, do not be pressured into signing any paperwork (which is a long-term monitoring contract) and contact your alarm company immediately.

Several of our clients have called us as a result of these "summer programs." Atronic Alarms will never send service or sales consultants to your home or business without a scheduled appointment. We do not require you to sign any long-term monitoring contracts and we will never pressure you to "upgrade" your system.

Atronic Alarms Marks 30th Anniversary as Leading Security Systems Provider

LENEXA, KANSAS—April 24, 2012—Atronic Alarms, Inc., one of the leading security, fire and home automation systems providers in Kansas, has marked its 30th year in business.

Founded in 1982 by Perry D. Atha, a fourth-generation Kansas City resident, the company has grown from a small local alarm provider to one of the largest security integrators in the region, employing 31 staffers and serving thousands of commercial and residential customers.

“This incredible milestone never could have been realized without the dedication of our amazing employees,” Mr. Atha said. “Their hard work and professionalism have helped us grow into one of the most respected and forward-thinking companies in the industry.”

Looking ahead, Mr. Atha sees a variety of opportunities for the company he began three decades ago. “While the struggling economy has created challenges for us in the consumer market, we have offset that through increased demand for our customized commercial solutions, such as utilizing video analytics to monitor power stations, indoor retail spaces and outdoor equipment lots.”

He notes that Atronic is at the forefront of the implementation of fully integrated, applications that allow clients to remotely manage their systems through their mobile phones, tablets and desktop computers.

Atronic Alarms is the recipient of numerous industry awards, including a 2004 “Dealer of the Year” award by SDM Magazine, as well as a 2010 “Best Companies to Work For” by Ingram’s magazine. The company also has been recognized for its assistance in protecting abuse victims through its work with the non-profit Kansas City Domestic Violence Protection Services Agency.

“We look forward to many more decades of serving our community, protecting our clients and fostering a great work environment for our employees,” Atha said.

Meet Four New Representatives of Atronic Alarms

Atronic Alarms is proud to introduce four new employees who have joined the family this year.

Collett Albright
Collett Albright joined the company with over 30 years of experience in the security industry and works with clients to set up their monitoring service.

"I knew there were good people at Atronic who cared about quality and customer service. Those qualities are important to me," she said.

She replaced Chrissy Wyble, who worked as the company's monitoring coordinator for the past seven years and who chose a new career closer to her home.

Jane McIntyre
Jane McIntyre recently moved into the accounting department to work with invoicing, billing and other records. Native of Kentucky, she has lived in Kansas City for 18 years.

"What attracted me to Atronic was definitely the people. They genuinely care and strive to provide exceptional customer service," she said.

Jane brings over 14 years of management experience to Atronic Alarms.

Jim Smith
Jim Smith was hired to assist in the service department and brings 12 years of industry experience to the company. He says he "loves his job" and looks forward to being a part of a company who treats you like a person and not just a number.

Ryan Elder
Ryan Elder joined the installation department and holds certifications from Wichita Technical Institute in Networks+ and A+. His hobbies include ninja training and video gaming when he isn't buried "in Legos, baby dolls or laundry."

"I was drawn to Atronic because they value their employees as much as their customers," he said.

Useful Items for Spring's Volatile Weather

Every spring season we remind people about water detectors that can be added to an existing alarm system to protect basements or other areas against water damage. These waterbugs can be set up near a sump pump and alert the monitoring station if they detect water.

Usually when the snows are melting and the spring rains set in, basements, wine cellars or other low lying areas are prone to flooding. Over the years water bugs have saved our clients thousands of dollars in water damage, and in some cases insurance companies will offer discounts if this device is part of your monitored security system.

And here's the good news: Your monitoring with Atronic Alarms will not increase.

Another item we thought was interesting to note can help relay information to you during a tornado warning or other violent storm. Rick Zink, one of the commercial design consultants at Atronic Alarms, said that last year his daughter huddled in a stairway with other coworkers when the tornado warning sirens went off in Overland Park. They sat in the stairwell for a very long time, not knowing when it was safe to come out. After that, Rick took it upon himself to find a radio App for cell phones that would broadcast local information. He choose TuneIn Radio Pro which can be downloaded to your iPhone, iPod or iPad as can also be found on the Android Market. He said that with the TuneIn Radio App you can listen to any station in the world.

Atronic Alarms can also provide tornado warning security applications for commercial buildings by installing a mushroom button (not mushroom cloud) near the reception area that, when pushed, will sound a siren with a recorded message alerting people in the building to head to safety.

Happy Birthday Leap Day Babies

The last time we saw a February 29 was in 2008 and before that is was 2004. A leap year usually occurs every 4 years, but why?

It has to do with the difference between a solar year and the annual calendar, which were meant to match up. However, the solar year is a bit longer . . . 5 hours, 48 minutes and 46 seconds, to be exact. That little bit add up each year, and over the course of a century, the difference between the solar year and the calendar year would be 25 days.

It was the Egyptians who were the first to come up with the idea of adding a leap day once every four years and then the Romans followed suit, resulting in Julius Caesar to introduce leap year by adding one day to the last month of the calendar year (February). In 1582, to confuse things a bit more, a slight adjustment was made which omitted leap year three times every 400 years. So if a century year is evenly divisible by 400 it is not a leap year.

This still doesn't stop life from happening on February 29, however, much to the frustration of a few software and Internet giants who didn't account for leap days when developing their product. Microsoft's Excel and Google's Blogger still have some glitches as a result of leap years.

Some people see it as a gift, where people are given one day extra to celebrate life. Some leapers, or people who have birthdays on the 29th, might see it as an opportunity to be able to pick their birthday each year: February 28 or March 1? Others may see it as the time to make or revisit their bucket list.

We are seeing it as an opportunity to pay special tribute to the just under 5 million "leapers" in the world. Having a birthday every four to eight years may keep you young enough but wouldn't be a lot of fun, so we wish all of you a big Happy Birthday. Live it large.

Door-to-Door Scammers and Unethical Businesses

We've written about this topic before and think it is important to revisit it again. Unfortunately, in all industries there are people who engage in unethical business practices. How do consumers know who to trust?

The video below shows a couple in the Missouri area who were unsure of this particular alarm company's sales pitch but who were still talked into signing a contract, leaving them without security system for several days.

If you are approached by another alarm company who is wanting to "upgrade" your system, provide you with a "cheaper" monitoring service, or who says they've merged with your existing alarm provider, call your existing alarm provider first before you make any decisions. Most reputable companies who have purchased or merged with other businesses will send clients letters explaining the acquisition.

In all industries, ask for references and go online to the Better Business Bureau (BBB) or contact them directly at 816-421-7800 (Kansas City's BBB) to check the company's ratings. Also, look for any unresolved complaints. The BBB will drop a business's rating if there are complaints that have not been resolved in an appropriate fashion (if a company does not respond to a complaint or shows no effort to work with the client.)

Protect yourself with knowledge and don't be embarrassed to ask questions. If you are confused by what a fast talking "salesperson" is telling you, ask them to leave or walk away. You can always call them back later if you have conducted thorough research and are satisfied that they are trustworthy.

Atronic Alarms Case Study: Construction Company Seeks Solution to False Alarms

What do you do when your company has a problem with false alarms? You re-evaluate your security system. That is what JE Dunn Construction, Kansas City's very own national construction company, did when they began experiencing multiple false alarms with their preexisting beam intrusion system. False alarms were occurring due to a combination of prairie grass or trash blowing through the infrared beams, animals moving through the yard or the employees setting items in a beam’s path.

Something different had to be done. So Atronic Alarms' design consultants Wes Cowsert and Rick Zink buckled in to come up with an ultimate solution. They wanted to build a sophisticated system that would center around motion activity with video verification and yet integrate into entry access so employees could easily arm and disarm.
Most companies with large lots need
surveillance to help keep out intruders.
Video monitoring and remote verification
provides the economical solution
to prevent loss and eliminate false alarms.

Utilizing Honeywell outdoor wireless motion sensors, Panasonic PTZ cameras, a Panasonic NVR, the Honeywell Security and Fire control panel, the Bosch Easy Access Controller and Honeywell's Total Connect system, Wes and Rick custom design an integrated system that created a "cause and effect" that as a device was tripped, a live video feed would stream to the monitoring station. Monitoring personnel would determine if an intruder had entered the perimeter and whether proper authorities should be called.

With the Honeywell’s Total Connect service, authorized personnel can also access the system through any web-enable device, like a smart phone or iPad, and arm or disarm the system, open the gate or view a history of activity. Employees could also view cameras through the phone app, IP Cam View, as well as through a web browser on a desktop.

When finalized, both JE Dunn Logistic’s facilities were properly equipped to allow employees to check in on the status of the location 24 hours a day and provide video monitoring verification which eliminated their false alarms.

Access Control Systems for Your Business

Monitoring and restricting entry into certain areas of your building helps you manage your business more safely and efficiently. Access control is usually known as "keyless" entry because you provide keyfobs or cards to people, not keys. To enter / exit an area, the access control reader "reads" your keyfob or card and the door unlocks. You can also use it to open and close warehouse gates.

Alysia LaRock, marketing and sales assistant for Atronic Alarms, Inc.,
presents her card to the reader to unlock the back door to the office.
Photo by Rick Zink, commercial security consultant.
Access control systems are usually the second layer of security and are perfect for:
    •    Retail Shopping Centers
    •    Schools and Campuses
    •    Hospitals
    •    Daycare Facilities
    •    Warehouse/Manufacturing Plants
    •    Restaurants
    •    Businesses

It is also perfect for restricted access into certain areas of the building, like file rooms, IT rooms or other areas of sensitivity.

Keyfobs or cards can be managed electronically through a web-based program allowing you remote access at any time. Adding or removing people to the system is far less expensive then re-keying a door if one of your employees loses a key. (It is also easier than fumbling around for keys or remembering different security codes.)

At the end of the day you can get a list of people who entered and exited different areas of the building and the time of day it was recorded. You can also receive these notifications on your web-enabled smart phone.

Atronic Alarms has many different solutions for access control depending upon the application. Contact the office for more information at 913.362.0000.

Our Favorite Mobile Phone Apps

How many apps do you have downloaded on your iPhone, iPad, Droid or other Internet enabled smart phones? Which ones are your favorite? With thousands of Apps to choose from it might be a daunting task to start, so that is why we came up with a list of Apps we like here at the office.

Curtis Mayes, Installation Manager at Atronic Alarms, says his most valuable apps on his phone include Snaplink for his alarm system, Nviewer for his cameras, his Email app, and Facebook.  He also uses IP Cam Viewer to check his staff in the office when he is not there. His fun app? Drag Racing.

Rick Zink, Commercial Design Consultant, has over 582 apps on his iPhone, and says that he couldn't live without Dropbox, a cloud-based app that allows him to access documents from multiple computers; Geomeasure, which gives him the ability to measure a building in seconds; iReconcile, a checkbook, accounting app and Redlazor, a barcode app. Then there is of course Google, which is pretty standard on most phones. (His fun app? Too many to list!)

Alysia LaRock, Marketing and Sales Support, said that she likes Facebook, PinInterest and Redbox, and also uses her Email App, Alarmnet and Total Connect for her home's security.

Jason Rothrove, Design Consultant, says that his "must have" app is Email. He also likes Craigslist.

Other popular Apps for Atronic employees include IC Realtime, which allows you to access and control IC cameras from your iPad or iPhone, and the H@me app for the HAI Home Automation System. There is also Weatherbug, Google Sky, Pandora Radio, Twitter and LinkedIn.

Five Reasons to Invest in a Monitored Security and Fire System

PERSONAL SAFETY
If someone breaks into your home, alarms will sound to scare off the intruder as the monitoring station is contacted. After an initial call is placed to the location, the police are dispatched.

PEACE-OF-MIND
If your kids are coming home to an empty house, how nice would it be to know the proper authorities would be contacted if something happens? Additionally, many systems now have the option to view your home over a secure Internet connect with IP cameras so you can check in on your kids at any time.

PET SAFETY
A monitored fire system provides 24-hour protection even when the system is disarmed. The fire department is dispatched immediately if a signal is sent, which helps protect your pets and your home’s assets while you are away. A fire can get out of control in minutes, and immediate notification of the proper authorities may make all the difference between rescue and drastic loss.
“Ninety percent of your life and your survival come down to the small choices you make . . . Did you check the air pressure in your tires? Did you replace the batteries in your smoke detector?”
Author Ben Sherwood’s recounting of Sam Dunn’s experience in The Survivors Club
INSURANCE DISCOUNTS
It is obviously a benefit to the insurance companies if a home is protected from fire and theft. Most providers offer discounts off your homeowner’s insurance for monitored security and fire protection.

ENVIRONMENTAL AND LIFE SAFETY
Did you know that many systems have the ability to alert you to environmental changes in your home when you are not there? For example, if water is detected in your basement, if the temperature in your house is too low or if carbon monoxide is present.

Client Fights Vandalism with Video Analytics

Gardner Energy, an electric utility company serving the 18,000 plus residents of Gardner, Kansas, runs three energy substations within five miles of each other to power the entire community. After an episode where vandals entered the premises after hours and damaged the control boxes, Darrin McNew, electric operations supervisor, met with Wes Cowsert of Atronic Alarms.

As a six year design consultant for Atronic, Wes knew immediately that IP video analytics would be the perfect solution to their problem.

Actual video footage of the site, with the blue and red boxes identifying between
objects and people.
Video analytics are “smart” cameras that have the technology to distinguish between people, animals and vehicles which helps eliminate false alarms. About a third of the cost of a full-time guard service, video analytics provides 24-hour protection without hiring extra personnel or investing in recording equipment.

Atronic Alarms installed two wireless video analytic IP cameras at each substation which monitors all activity. Police are dispatched after verification that an intruder or vehicle may be trespassing.

Total Connect 2.0

Total Connect 2.0 is Honeywell’s newest solution for home and business owners to have mobile and web access to monitor security, lighting, HVAC and video.

With hardwired or wireless IP cameras and access to the Internet through a smart phone, iPad or computer, Total Connect users can check in with family or employees from anywhere in the world.

The upgraded product utilizes many of the same functions of the older version but has an enhanced graphic interface, which makes it easier to track and manage your environment.
  • Know when your children get home from school or if they haven’t arrived home by a specific time.
  • Know if an elderly relative has left the premises, pressed a panic pendant or summoned emergency help.
  • Receive an alert when the security system has been armed or disarmed.
Find out when a liquor cabinet or safe has been opened.

We Offer More than Just Security Systems

[Warning: Subliminal Messages May be Included]

Atronic Alarms has been blessed with wonderful clients who share their stories with other people in the Kansas City area about their security, fire or home automation systems.

We also provide Access Control, Cameras, U.L. Commercial Fire Systems and Video Monitoring for residential and commercial applications.

Many times people will even take the time to provide feedback through our client satisfaction surveys, like the most recent one we received back on January 8, 2012.

"Sleeping much better since the alarm has been installed as we had a lot of car break-ins and one attempted house break-in in November. I was glad I accidentally tripped the alarm and saw how fast the response was from your monitoring center. Gave me peace of mind."

Much of our business comes from word-of-mouth and referrals by satisfied clients.

We also provide Access Control, Cameras, U.L. Commercial Fire Systems and Video Monitoring for residential and commercial applications.

However, our clients are also honest with some of the improvements they would like to see us make. We sincerely appreciate this and take each suggestion seriously.

We also provide Access Control, Cameras, U.L. Commercial Fire Systems and Video Monitoring for residential and commercial applications.

One client even told us increase our advertising in the area. "We didn't even know you provided Access Control," he said to one of the design consultants recently.

We also provide Access Control, Cameras, U.L. Commercial Fire Systems and Video Monitoring for residential and commercial applications.

There are many reasons why Atronic has been successful for 30 years and a small part of that reason is by investing money in employees and their satisfaction, not necessarily in advertising dollars.

We also provide Access Control, Cameras, U.L. Commercial Fire Systems and Video Monitoring for residential and commercial applications.

So, the next time your friends and peers are asking about alarm companies, let them know that Atronic Alarms is not just about residential security, fire and home automation. Let them know we can also provide Access Control, Cameras, U.L. Fire Systems, Remote Video Monitoring and Monitoring Verification. (In addition, if you are a monitoring client you will receive three months free monitoring if they become a client.)

Or, if that is too much of a mouthful, just have them just call us.

[End of Subliminal Messaging]

Carbon Monoxide Poisoning Threat is Real

Carbon Monoxide (CO) is an odorless, invisible gas that comes from fuels, such as gasoline, wood, coal, natural gas, propane, oil and methane, that burn incompletely. You can't see it or smell it, and it's symptoms are most often confused with the flu, food poisoning and other illnesses.

Just recently a family in Kansas City barely survived CO poisoning. The threat is real and can be prevented by investing in a CO Detector that is linked to your alarm system. When the deadly gas is detected in your home, your monitoring station will be notified* and you or the proper authorities will be contacted.  Your monthly monitoring from Atronic Alarms will not increase and you will be investing in the safety of your family and your pets with a CO device.
"CO alarms should be installed in a central location outside each sleeping area and on every level of the home and in other locations where required by applicable laws, codes or standards. For the best protection, interconnect all CO alarms throughout the home. When one sounds, they all sound."
